The use of salt is essential for life and is considered one of the basic human tastes. Salt has
long serve a purpose as seasoning or preservation of food. In the gospel of Matthew Jesus
points out that we are to be the “salt of the earth” to those whom we encounter daily.
Our form of seasoning is to be one of providing comfort to those who are in pain,
struggling, hurting or as moral support. Our actions of providing a little seasoning can be
as simply listening to an individual’s concerns. Sometimes our own mere actions of hope in
Jesus will have them reaching out to Christ for strength. As baptized Christians our actions
or words of encouragement in seeking Jesus can draw an individual to discover that they
are loved and are never abandoned by him.
Our world as beautify and wonderfully made by God and at times is continuously
shrouded it seems by sin. As darkness looms around the corner we run the risk of
remaining in the dark.
Like salt which enhances life, light is also serves a purpose as we journey towards our
eternal home. Jesus shares “you are the light of the world… let your light shine before
others, so that they may see good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Mt. 5
15-16)When we shine the light of Christ we bring hope, faith, love, courage, gratitude and
kindness for all.
God wants us to share our joy, salt and light with others. Just has he supplies our needs our
through the Word and Eucharist our beliefs allows others to see that he will take care of
their needs as well. Even thought our lives may experience struggles and hardships, each
and every one of us are to offer light and seasoning to others. As we shine our light and
season others let us seek to do good wherever we go in the world and give glory to our
Father in heaven.
“Dear Lord, we so much want to live in the light of your faithfulness. Help us never to
become complacent in our journey with you. Guide us to be more giving – better listeners,
slower to judge, and champions of others. Amen” (Rev. Herbert Yost, C.S.C.)
